About Shamanism

What is Shamanism?

Shamanism is an ancient spiritual belief system which is practiced by indigenous people around the world. Anthropologists believe this practice to be over 40,000 years old, and that it is, perhaps, humankind’s original spiritual practice. If we traced our ancestral lineage far enough we would find that we all came from a shamanic heritage.

Shamanism is not a religion, but rather a spiritual practice based on animism: the belief that all things have Spirit. In the shamanic perspective the animals, plants, stones and elements all embody the essence of the Creator. Everything is Sacred…Therefore, right relation with these beings is essential to spiritual, emotional and physical survival…a metaphysical Sacred Balance. Shamanic cultures lived in harmony by maintaining Sacred Balance with each other, the plants, the animals and the earth. In the shamanic perspective, we become ill when we have lost our Sacred Balance.

The modern revival of shamanism has been accelerated by the deep-rooted need many people are experiencing to bring back into balance and heal our relationship with each other and the Earth.

What is a Shaman?

The word shaman comes from the Tungus Siberian peoples’, saman, which means “ one who sees in the dark” and is used to describe a man or woman who has become a healer or seer through initiation, visions, or intensive training. The shaman gathers information in a “journey” which is an altered spiritual state much like a deep meditation. During this journey the shaman travels outside of normal time and space to work in partnership with Spirit Teachers and receive guidance about what is in need of healing. In ancient times the shaman’s ability to see the unseen and receive visions helped heal the sick, identify medicinal plants, resolve conflicts, relocate the tribe, find herds of animals for the hunt, find lost objects or people and avoid warring bands. In our modern times a shamanic practitioner uses this visioning to diagnose and heal the spiritual aspects of illness and work towards restoring Sacred Balance to the client.

Spiritual aspects of illness may manifest as Power Loss, Soul Loss, Intrusions, Ancestral Wounding, or Energetic imprints in the Luminous Energy Field
